The Challenge: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury or death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1-14. Additionally, swimming ability decreases across racial and socio-economic groups.
How We’re Helping: We are working to decrease the drowning rate with YMCA Project SAFE (Safety, Aquatics, and Fitness Education), a free program that provides swim instruction to first graders in Hastings. In partnership with area school districts, the YMCA is working to keep kids in our community SAFE.
