History of the Hastings YMCA![]() The Early DaysIn 1881, Hastings became one of the first towns in Nebraska to become a part of the YMCA organization. The newly formed YMCA was located in two upstairs rooms on Second Street. The rooms were supplied with all the major newspapers of the state, national periodicals and books. Membership was open to men only with fees at $2.00 per year. In May 1885, the association purchased ground at 214 North Lincoln for $1,000 and with a $7,000 mortgage, they built a two-story brick facility, becoming the first YMCA in Nebraska to have its own building.
By the early 1970’s, the downtown facility was showing its age and the YMCA board decided a major capital campaign was needed to construct a new building. Recent History Construction on the current YMCA building began in 1978 and the building was open for use on March 17, 1980. In 2005 the Hastings YMCA merged with Champions Sports & Recreation in order to offer expanded services from two locations. The YMCA now has ample space to add more programs as needed. Throughout its long history and many changes, the ultimate goal of the YMCA has been to create better lives and a stronger community through promoting good health, confident kids, and family unity.![]() |
