YMCA TO OFFER RUG MAKING

HASTINGS, NE—The Hastings Family YMCA will be offering a unique, new program for their members. The YMCA will offer crochet rag rug making classes at the end of November.

The crochet rag rug class will be led by professional rug maker, Sally Gibson, whose work has been featured in Country Sampler Magazine. Sally’s business, Rags to Rugs, specializes in these beautiful, durable rugs and now she is bringing this art form to the public.

“These classes are an opportunity to learn a ‘lost’ craft from days gone by. These classes are sure to evoke calm and relaxation for the people attending. The class is great for anyone interested in meeting new people and anyone who is interested in working with fabric crafts,” said Gibson.

The classes are held at a perfect time to be given as a holiday gift or to create a rug to be given as a gift.

The Hastings YMCA will offer two classes, one on Tuesday, November 27 at 7 p.m. and one on Thursday, November 29 at 9 a.m. The classes are two hours in length and both will be taught at the 16th Street YMCA Meeting Room.

The cost for the class is for one two-hour class. This includes instruction and all materials needed. Class participants can select the colors they would like to work with. Also, at no additional charge, participants can return to another class session for help and more advice. Anyone interested can sign up at either YMCA Welcome Center or download the class registration online and send to the Hastings Family YMCA, PO Box 1065, Hastings, Nebraska 68902.

“This is just the beginning of the scope of craft classes we would like to offer at the Hastings YMCA. Sally has the ability to offer other classes such as wagon wheel weaving, locker hooking, crocheting and naal binding. There is even the possibility of a class just for kids. The YMCA offers a great variety of activities for the physical being, but our mission includes the body, mind and spirit. These classes really serve the latter two and we’re excited to offer them,” said Kelly Hickman, Marketing and Events Director for the Hastings Family YMCA.
